The apparent cessation of the relationship between LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers and the next stop in his playing career continues to be the most discussed topic of the NBA offseason, this side of the Giannis Antetokounmpo saga.
The prevailing, and Klutch Sports-approved, narrative is that it was James who told the Lakers to soldier on without him, as he’d decided to continue his career elsewhere next season, however Ric Bucher is buying this story.
Appearing on On The Ball With Ric Bucher, Bucher claimed the Lakers had already made the decision to move on from James shortly after acquiring Luka Dončić. According to Bucher, the organization’s long-term vision shifted toward building around Dončić, making James’ eventual departure a matter of “when” rather than “if.”
Bucher also questioned the narrative surrounding James’ future, saying he found it difficult to believe that the four-time NBA champion was the one driving the separation. He suggested the Lakers had already determined they were ready to turn the page and dismissed the idea that James was controlling the situation.
The longtime NBA analyst was equally skeptical of comments from Rich Paul, who has publicly stated there is significant interest around the league in James. Bucher bluntly called those claims “BS,” implying that the messaging is more about shaping public perception than reflecting the actual market.
Neither the Lakers, James, nor Klutch Sports have publicly responded to Bucher’s remarks.
The comments arrive during an offseason already filled with speculation after the blockbuster acquisition of Dončić dramatically altered the Lakers’ trajectory. While James remains one of the league’s most accomplished players, questions continue to swirl about how he can fit, from a basketball perspective on many teams, particularly those with a core of younger players.
As of now, Bucher’s comments remain his own analysis and reporting, not information confirmed by the Lakers or James’ camp. However it does seem that the Lakers priorities shifted to those focused on Luka, beginning with their acquisition of the young superstar, which James claimed to have no foreknowledge of. That direction has only been cemented further this offseason, with the team prioritizing signing Austin Reaves, as well as the trade for Jazz big man Walker Kessler.
